Mariners are very fine outboards. No such thing as a Mariner as they were made by other producers. Some were made by Yamaha and are very good.

Which years were made by Yamaha ? I was under the impression they were always Mercury marine built.

When they came out with them , the models up to 60 HP were built by YAMAHA .----In line 4 / 6 and V-6 were Mercury machies.

Don't forget the 3s they were Mercs as well. I would prefer to forget them though

No love for the Mariner 3 cyl here haha. My only Mercury engine was a 1972 7.5hp that had seen better days and ended up getting parted out.

Alright boys I found a 1977 Evinrude 85 for $75 and I'm going to buy it this Saturday.

Check it over, a Compression Test, and a look at the Gear oil. It is 43 yrs old, If you do buy it, an new Impeller is the first thing,
77 that was the 2nd last year of the 92.6 in block

I don't know if I'll be able to do all that before buying it but I surely will before I put a bunch of money into fixing it. I figure worst that could happen is I resell it for parts for about what I have in it.
