Last year the lower unit had a trace of water in it as the oil was milky.. It was stored indoors over the winter with new oil in it.. I ordered a seal kit last week and am still waiting for it. When i drained the gearcase there was some water and small metal flakes. The shift cradle was just hanging on to one side of the yoke and there was a small piece of it floating around inside... The gears and clutch dog look good.. I have two 9.5s that I have been using for pieces and it appears that all the parts are the same except for the gears.. So I hope to find a shift cradle in one of them...The yoke is also a little messed up so I will change that as well... Did the cradle break from the water inside or for some other reason?

Photo is too fuzzy to tell if the sides of the cradle are severely worn due to water. But yes, that happens. Actual breakage without wear is pretty unusual.

These photos might be better. I included a couple of pictures of the clutch dog also for someone with a trained eye to check.. There is some wear on it.

Yeah, typical water wear on the cradle, resulting in thin sides of the fork's pocket, and probably why it broke.

They look ok to me, as well as I can tell. I wonder, how is the big thrust bushing on the forward gear hub?

What does the bushing above the pinion look like ?-------The " too small " bearing surface on the driveshaft above the pinion, post a picture of that area.

There is not any slop in the bushing, but I do not know what it should look like. One photo on the prop shaft and one off..

I am going out now to remove the driveshaft. I see that it is keyed. And it looks like a c- clip needs to be removed?

There is no play in the bushing above the pinion but it is scratched and the drive shaft has some light scratching also... The C-clip was in very small pieces.. Maybe that is what scratched the bushing and drive shaft?

The upper bushing just under the water pump is very lightly scratched also. But not apparent on the drive shaft.

By the looks of the bushing is it worth putting in a seal kit or should I be looking for a different gearcase? Thanks for your help. And F_R also.

I am sorry I do not know how to tell if the bushing was replaced.
