I have a 89 Johnson 48hp motor with a bad lower unit I have acquired a 93 48hp evinrude lower and to me the only thing that appears different is the shaft mine is tapered at the top spline where the 93 is not can I just put my shaft into the evinrude lower and trim it or are there other compatibility issues I will be facing with this thanks in advance.

Are the splines the same? Count them
I dont know any more about that, but someone else im sure will.
How far off is the difference in length, and shift shaft too

The small spline at the top of the driveshaft was used in 89 / 90 / 91 and 92 model years.-------These gearcases are NOT ROBUST in my opinion.-----Yes you can swap out the shaft.------Might be best to get a shop to shim the 93 pinion to the 89 driveshaft.

NOTE-----To swap the shaft would require nearly a total teardown.----Good time to install a seal kit too.
