On my 1972 85 hp V4, I'm trying to hook up; a tach. I can find a grey wire in the bundle leaving the motor-side round plug, but I can't find a grey wire emerging from the harness anywhere. There is supposed to be a gray wire attached to #4 terminal screw, to pick up a frequency signal from the stator. I suppose it could have been cut off/taped over, but I hate to strip the harness looking for it. Any suggestions? If I knew where it was supposed to emerge from the harness maybe I could find it.....

Take the plastic side cover off the remote control. You should find it in there.

Thanks. But I know where the control end is. It's the motor end that's missing.

Have an ohm meter ?--------Now find the grey wire at the terminal block on the motor.-------Find the pin in the big black plug that it goes to with the meter.

Oops. Motor end is on the screw terminal strip, along with the yellow/grey stripe wires
