Hi. 1974 evinrude 70 hp outboard. was working great. I switched from one tank of fresh gas to one with half fresh and half year old gas. ten minutes later the boat started quitting when I had it in fwd or rev. Ran fine in idle. When I switched back to the first tank it still quit, but maybe I need to let it run for an extended perios of time to flush out all the bad gas? Not sure if the old gas was treated or not. I am assuming this is bad gas. Anything ELSE it could be?

The fuel in the second tank may not simply have been stale but may have been contaminated with water or other debris. If that was the case then may yu well need to flush out the system and clean the carbs.

Provided the fuel is not contaminated I have always found that a 50:50 mix of old and new is satisfactory but after once having to strip and clean a carb at sea on a dark windy night before I could enter the harbour I was heading for I do not fail to also filter the old fuel!
