Im vexed big time so before I drop this motor in the trailer and go dump it, my plate on my Johnson V4 has a tag but the model numbers worn off with only the S on the end remaining, now ordinarily Id look on the timing sticker it would at least give me the horsepower which is what I want, I was told its a 120 but they didnt cone out till 1985, shes very pre 85 is has the external trim motor the big tall one, the cover is not its original , can the serial number give up anything 613952, if its an 85 its definately off to the tip.

That mechanic/seller is full of something brown. The carbs/reeds from a 120 will not fit on a 135, or any non looper V4. A few pictures may or may not help in getting a rough idea of the year.

Edit: Based on the ? tall external trim pump? that would place it 73 - 77

Mechanic is adamant its a 135, a look at the power head tells me its been apart, the timing piece cast into the manifold is broken off so manifold needs changing anyway

1)First find you a mechanic that knows motors 2) Most likely a 1976-77 85hp as 135hp has exhaust hump

Agreed-----The 135 hp has the bubble exhaust.-----Yours does not !!------And find another mechanic I say.

Ok if its 85 its of to the dump
It might be a 115.
Why do you have a hatred of the 85? With 92.6 cu in it was a very low stressed torquey engine

And as suggested, find a better outboard mechanic

I'd make it run and sell it for a few hunnert bucks before hauling it to the dump?

Fwiw I have a complete 'boomerang' ignition system for those motors. New coils/plug wires and CDI powerpack. 'Case anybody needs one.
