I am curious as to the easiest way to access the water pump on my 55 hp 1970's Chrysler outboard. I have a manual that covers the lower unit and it seems like you have to disassemble the propeller and gearcase and then take apart practicaly the whole lower unit to access the water pump. Can I just disconnect the shift linkage and somehow drop the whole lower unit before digging into a prodgect i'm not sure I have all the tools and knowledge to complete?

Re: Chrysler Outboard water pump question

As I age my memory doubles in age, but on m 50hp it wasn't that much more difficult than any pump? I can't imagine you'd need to split the gearcase to get to it? Not sure how much difference there is between the two, but...? Somebody here's got one I'm sure and they'll share more soon enough. Good luck and welcome to iboats!

Re: Chrysler Outboard water pump question

Easy With Basic Tools!!!

Quick tips with the use of my 1970 35 HP Chrysler pics that can be the same 35 HP ? 55 HP. My trick was to disconnect the shift rod at the cotter pin vs adjusting my gears after the 1st impeller (by centering the coupling). This is basically straight forward and in past posts that are not easy to search IMO.

Good Luck! With attachments and Ill try to watch for questions if others h/n helped.

Re: Chrysler Outboard water pump question

sometimes it looks like manuals have things in the 'wrong' place..
anywho, like wickware's pics show, all you have to do to get to the water pump is drop the lower unit,
no surgery needed on the innards of the LU
