87 force 125 noise in neutral.

Last time out the lower unit was making a terrible noise when in neutral but would shift into forward and reverse just fine and once in gear it doesn't make any noise. The noise was almost like it wasnt going fully out of gear and the teeth were catching. Anyone know how to fix this issue or know what it could be?

Adjust the shift cable.
Unhook the cable at the motor.
Shift into N
Then shift the linkage into N as you turn the prop.
Shift through the gears from N to F/R then N again.
Then adjust the end of the cable so it meets the trunion end.
