Recently acquired a 88 Bayliner Capri I've just been doing some maintenance

I've ran it on the water plenty of times but it doesn't like to stay idle unless it's in gear . I've set the floats cleaned carbs new plugs new fuel lines and bulb tried to adjust idle screws but didn't seem to do much. Motor has 150psi compression on all 4. From what I can see the reeds look ok. Not broken or missing at least.

Only thing I have not done is check the timing. I also am suspicious if the water pump works as it should, most steam and exhaust comes out of the two holes on back and it doesn't seem to take water from muffs, but it has not shut down on the water so I don't know.

Any advice would be great .

The majority of the water/ exhaust exits from the snout under the cavitation plate.
The 2 holes are for excess pressure and exhaust.
The 88 depending on the model had or didn't have a pressure relief valve.
Sometime in 88 they stopped installing the system.
The spring and valve would get locked in place and stop working.
Never did much anyway.

Tachometer?? set at 750-800 in gear, in the water.
That's about 1200 in N on the hose.
Needs to be set in the water.

The screws are not idle screws, they're air/fuel mix screws.
The idle is set with the towershaft.
Bottom of the shaft is a screw/jam nut.
Screwing in raises the idle.

Set the air screws at 1 1/2 turn out and adjust from there.

LOT'S of good info there.
