I am completing the repower of my pontoon from a 1998 Force 40Hp to a 1989 force 85 hp. The 1989 has the neutral safety switch built into the power head. the new control I bought has the neutral safety switch installed in the control.. I AM LEARY ABOUT USING BOTH. i KNOW IT IS A DOUBLE SAFETY if I use them both but It could cause a real issue with troubleshooting in the future when I forget it has both. So do I do both?
The other issue in the wiring is the lanyard kill switch does this go between the two M connections on the ignition switch. the 40 hp had it built into th wiring harness as well as the neutral safety switch.

Just don't use the switch in the shifter.
You'll need a wiring diagram for your motor.

Thanks Jerry for both.
I was concerned because the shifter said it was required by the coast guard but I looked up some more last night and that is only if it is not built into the motor. I will tap into the harness by the lanyard switch between the blue and red wire..
Mercury sure improved the harness on the 40 putting connectors in the motor and up at the console.
