I'm looking at lower units and noticed there's multiple size shafts for a 86 force 85. Is there a way to tell what I need off the model number (856X6L) or is there a way to measure it?

You measure the transom of the boat.--------20 " high requires a long shaft ( 20" ) motor.-----25" high requires an extra long shaft motor.-------Shaft length does NOT relate to the actual length of the drive shaft that sticks out of the lower unit.

That serial# comes back to a 20"

You measure from the flat surface of the cavitation plate to the top
of the drive shaft.

That should be about 20"
25" is a long shaft.

Measuring the transom: center of the transoms top edge
to the bottom of the hull(usually under the drain plug.
Some are 20" some 25" and some 30"
Force made a 20 and a 25

Post a pic of the housing that the lower unit hooks to.
I can tell by looking at the housing what size the lower is.
