  • Gear Housing Section to fix

I am trying to fix my Gear Housing section from a 1989 Force Outboard 85HP motor. During oil change, I removed the gear shift arm by mistake and causing a lot of trouble - no reverse/no neutral. From the attached sketch, can you please help if part #45 to be connected to part #27 or to any other parts?? Thanks

Looks like it to me. That is your shifter rod and the clutch dog. Sounds like you have removed the pivot screw and didn't get it back into place correctly. Therefore you are stuck in forward forever. You have to realign the pivot again and install the pivot screw for it to function correctly again. With out being there to verify, that is my guess!

No, the 45 and 73 fit together down inside at the bottom after 45 and 46 get hooked up.
25 has a groove on one end and 73 fits in it.

The pivot screw(you removed) fits into 45 the cover needs to be removed to make the job easier.

      25/26/27 fit together first.

      Not that hard a job.

Hi Jerry. I did the work and opened the cover. I got 45 and 46 hooked up and inserted the pivot screw (32) to 45. I can only see 25 and unable to see 73. Is that I have to shake or toose up and down the whole gear housing section to find/see 73?. Thanks

25/26/27 go together, then 73 gets installed on the end of 25 with bearing assembly grease (see note below).
45/46 is installed with the pivot pin 32
Then the drive shaft assy. gets inserted into the drive.
As it get close to the coupler you lift the shift rod and try to engage the 45 and 73 together.
The half moon shaped carrier locks= make sure the grooves are clean.
They can be installed with the same grease to keep them in place.

Bearing assembly grease= easily dissolvable grease, once the parts work and move the grease dissolves and
the parts move easily. regular grease is too thick and won't dissolve as easy.
