45HP Chrysler runs only using choke?

My ole 1985 Chrysler would start but not keep running. I had to keep clicking the electric choke to get back to the dock. It would only run for a few seconds until I clicked the choke each time. The fuel filter is very clean, and has all new fuel lines.
Any ideas where I should start the detective work??? Thank YOU!!!!!!.

It sounds like a dirty carb problem. Other's with much more knowledge then I will have a better answer than I do. Check this post in the morning.

As it stays running when activating the choke it is a fuel issue.
Start with cleaning the carb and check/set the float level.

Before you pull out all jets and nossles check the setting of the fuel/air mixture screw. It is the one at top of the air intake.
When assable the carb again after cleaning,set it as it was before.
Should be 1-1,5 turn out from lightly seated.

Like the others suggest, clean the carb, then check the fuel pump diaphragm.
​Do a compression test, while the plugs are out compare them and see if one burns different than the other.
Check for water in the fuel.

Fuel filter?? the one on the pump?
Install a filter between the pump and the carb.
​Fram G-2/3/12 one of these 3 should fit.

I have a clear fuel filter inline just before fuel goes into the fuel pump. To check the fuel pump diaphragm, guess I have to take the the whole assembly off the head to get to the diaphragm. Took carb apart, blew it out with air pressure, bowl was clean...no sediment. Both plugs were perfect...tan color. Float looks level. That fuel pump diaphragm could be the culprit. I'll get to it next couple days.

​Sometimes a piece of dirt that can't be seen gets in there and messes up stuff?
Taking it apart could have moved it??

Was working on a 120 Force with twins and the top carb was messing up.
​I took it off and even swapped it with one from the other motor.
Cleaned the carb 3-4 times and finally the last time did the trick??
​A piece of crud the size of a pin point can block a passage and you can do nothing.
Glad it's working.
