Last year I noticed that the lower unit was leaking on my (new to me) 75 HP outboard. I pulled the lower unit & brought it back with me to re-seal it, and am now getting it ready for the season. Everything has gone more or less okay, but I am stuck on the water pump seal (#11 in the diagram here: http://i.imgur.com/NwOwhe8.png ). The factory service manual simply says "drive it out from the inside of the pump" - but there doesn't seem to be any way to do so. The seal bore it sits in has a step preventing access to the bottom of the seal, and trying to hit the upper 'lip' of the seal from the inside has only resulted in mangling it.

Has anybody had this problem & has a good solution to share?

Drill two small holes in the seal for example at 9 and 3 o?clock.
Drive two sheet metal screws in the holes and use a wisegrip or a screwdriver to pry out the seal.
If the seal has a steel carrier use a nippers to pull/twist it out.
Be careful not to drill through the seal seat in the water impeller housing.

Well, that was a trip.

The way I ended up getting it out was taking a tiny carbide burr in a die grinder & 'slicing' a piece of the seal out, then peeling it away from the water pump housing. It corroded itself pretty well in to the seal bore, but eventually came free.
