Cooling system for Volvo Diesle MD17C

I have a 1985 Storebro Royal 33 with a Volvo diesel and penta outdrive. I'm having trouble getting the cooling system to work. I have replaced the impeller and thermostat and have water coming through the inlet from the outdrive to the water pump. The system also contains a vented loop. Does the system require priming.

If this is a raw water cooled motor then I don't see a vent/bleed screw. If it is closed cooling then there could be on the antifreeze side. There are two bleed screws for the fuel system which are used when the filters are changed, or it runs out of fuel.

What caused the initial trouble, the impeller?

If it was the impeller, did you get all the pieces and back flush?
