Hi there, Still plugging along, trying to fill my head with the unkown. I have a mechanical helm with one cable going to a mercury 115 2 stroke. Should anything be sandwiched between my steering wheel and bezel? When I purchased the boat, the helm was quite wobbly... snugging down the nylon nut seemed to help but of course now it feels like I've introduced more friction into the system. I have steering wheel with keyway, mated to the bezel which is covering the mechanical helm. Should there be a washer or grease between the steering wheel and bezel?

If i understand what you're saying correctly, there should be an air space between the steering wheel and the bezel.

Remove the steering wheel nut and remove steering wheel
remove the 2 screws and remove bezel.
the helm unit should be bolted to a mounting bracket that is bolted to the dash

Has anyone ever taken a Mercury Ride Guide Steering Wheel Shaft out and taken to a machine shop, had the end built up with a welder and re-machined down in order to put a 3/4 tapered hole steering wheel on? I'm thinking this is the way to go and just wondered if anyone else has ever attempted to do it.
