Pretech controller query

I'll keep this simple. I've swapped the original Quicksilver controller on my boat for a Pretech controller, model number, Pre 308601. There are adjustments possible within the controller to lengthen or shorten the stroke on the lever, but no matter what position I choose, I can't get the required 3" + - 1/8" required on the shift control cable. The most I can get is 2 1/2". Am I missing something or can anyone shed some light on my problem? Thanks in advance.
