Power Steering Noise

Hi,

Noticed some difficulty steering, my power steering reservoir was dry. I filled it with STP power steering fluid. Steering was initially much smoother...

Now it is making whine and hissing noises - at the start and end of the video clip - when cranking the wheel all the way.

It looks like the fluid level is dropping again so I suspect a leak. Also, it looks like a small amount of bubbling in the fluid when I look in the tank. Anyone have a diagnostic write up for power steering? Do I need a particular fluid?

your manual would have suggested ATF or engine oil

if you have a leak, it could be your power steering cooler

Check you power steering cooler, might be cracked. If you run it on muffs you will see oil coming out the exhaust if its cracked

Switched to the appropriate ATF and she quieted down right away. Will keep an eye on the level to go after the cooler next. Thanks, good lesson in hunting down and reviewing the manual.

This is a great tip. Kind of tips that you will not learn in school.
