when i change the stator on my 1986 yamaha 115hp, do i simply change it or are there timing issues to deal with as well?

I never changed one on a Yammy, but on my OMC twins and triples you just pop the flywheel off and unbolt one then bolt on the other.

The new one will probably only go on one way. So I don't think you could move it for any timing issue... But I can't see your setup and therefore don't know that for certain on your engine...
