I posted this in the Motor specific section and did not get much help hoping that someone can help me better here. A little back story so you know where I am coming from. I am new to Boats I am a car guy and wanted to try a boat. I boat a 1990 procraft with no motor or controls. I found a 1970 johnson 115 hp with controls. Well the controls are a messy situation the harness was cut and I have to remake it ( No big deal) It came with no keys, so need a new ignition switch (more on that later).

So after looking at the motor, I saw that the starter has no wires hooked up to it. I have looked for wiring Diagrams for My specfic motor but the closest that I could find is a 1969 115 Johnson. This is a 1970 115hp Johnson model # is 115esl70d I am not sure what the "D" stands for but when you look it up on the document that is posted in the sticky it does not show a "d" on the end of the model #.

So to double check I need to attach the bottom post of the starter solenoid to the post the sticks out of the starter, (like in the picture) and is there a certain gauge that I need to use? Also Do I need to attach a ground directly from the starter to the block, the picture is hard to tell where the ground is coming from? I think and this is a huge think, that the ground is supposed to come from a wire that is in the boat controls. The reason I say this is the wiring harness from the controls has 11 wires and the Motor harness only has 10 wires. You can see on the left there is a black wire that is not in the harness that is on the right. Here is a pic, and please don't ask why they just did not unplug it cause I have no Idea!

Next I see that there is something that was attached to the starter solenoid post but was cut is there anything that I should be looking for or should something be coming off of that? See second Pic

Also I need to run a Power Wire from the Battery to the Top post of the Starter solenoid? Right. Also does this wire need to be Fused?

And Last is the ignition switch? Ok so I dont have keys, do i need a specific switch or can I use any 5 pole switch (the one that is in the control box is 5 pole), as long as it fits into the controls, or what if I extend the wires can I still use any switch and put it where ever I want.

Ok I lied one more question in the pic below there are 2 purple wires that look like they are coming out of the engine they are not plugged in, does anyone know what these are for and where they go

You don't need a new ignition switch. Look for a letter code in the area around the key slot. Take that code to the Evinrude dealer and ask for as many code "x" keys (where "X" is the code from your switch). There are only a few keys so you may even take the switch with you and have them use their "try out" riing to find the right key.

The starter gets its ground by being bolted to the engine block
You need a battery cable (negative) that runs from the NEG terminal on the battery to the engine block
You need a battery cable (positive) that runs from the POS terminal on the battery to the large post on the solenoid.
Ground in the engine to control box harness serves as a ground for the instruments on the console.
The bigger red wire in the harness should be HOT (+12 volts) all the time. It goes to the "B" terminal on the ignition switch

What I did is soldered the red wire back together and the engine harness assuming that it has not been messed with should put that wire where it goes correct?

Does the ground in the control box need to go all the way back to the motor sin e is the only metal obviously should probably just delete this sentence.... Lol

Yes you need ground at the control box. All grounds at the helm go back to the engine block and then the negative terminal of the battery via that wire and the big battery cable.
