Where was that post about battery type???

In one of the post replies someone said that the type of battery for a boats charging was or wasn't supposed to be maintenance free battery. Thanks Mars bar

I would guess that it isn't supposed to be maintenance free, because that's a misleading term. You still have to take care of the battery. I couldn't justify the extra cost if you have easy access to the battery. Regular batteries can last much longer if properly maintained. A good place for a maintenance free battery is in, for example, a motorcycle, where the battery is buried and you have to start removing parts to get to it.

The issue with maintenance free batteries arises when they are used with unregulated charging systems. If you are using an auto battery for starting purposes on an unregulated system and you make regular, long distance, high rpm runs that battery probably won't last long. Marine starting, dual purpose, and deep cycle batteries are not typically termed "maintenance free" and do need attention to water levels. If your engine charging system has a voltage regulator you don't have anything to worry about -- except water level checks.
