Motorguilde X3 troller issue

I have a Motorguide X3-40 troller that is only working on speeds 1, 2 & 3. When I switch to 4 & 5 it still works but there is no increase in speed. I checked and all the wiring and everything looks good. My warranty is expired, and when I called Motorguide they told me I had to take it to a service center and were not very helpful. Would anyone know the most likely cause for this? I would much rather fix it myself. Thanks!

If the power connections are all good, then you either have a bad switch, OR the motor windings them self are shorted on the 4 and fifth speeds to the third windings. That would cause the 3, 4 and 5th speeds to all be the same. If you are familiar using a meter, now is the time to dig it out and start checking the wires in the head unit and the wires in the motor section.

Thanks gm280! I have a meter, just not very handy with it! I will try to figure it out.
