I want to place my battery in the middle of my boat ( for weight reasons) and need to run a cable from the battery to the motor. What is a safe gauge wire to use for running about 8-10 ft. The only thing the battery will be used for is to crank over the engine.

Myself, I would use 6 gauge wire. I am sure others have other thoughts, but in boats with smaller engines I have found that works well for me. Of course it really depends on the amps the starter is drawing, using 6 for 10 feet will give you and upper range of 105 amp draw. The amp draw on that starter should be up to about 30 in a no load situation, So 6 gauge over 10 feet will give you more than enough headroom.
