I have a 500 series Garmin gps that I disconnect and keep indoors when not in use. After a year or two of use, I'll plug it in and it won't turn on. What I found before is the female end of the connection gets some crap / corrosion built up causing the problem. The pins in that connection are very small. Does anyone know of a way to clean the female end of that connection? And then, how do you keep it clean?

Thanks for your help.

I’ve run a 4000 series MFD since 2005. Saltwater use only. No corrison issues at all.

Unless they short changed you on the 500 series, use the rubber connector caps that come with the unit when not in use. Use on male and female connectors when not in use.

Check to make sure the o rings are still intact.

if only the power cable is giving you problems review your grounding situation.
