Great, you found your issue. Now, if the wires are corroded ( even if you cut the old ground partially off ) the corrosion travels up the wire ( unless it is marine grade ). Are the wires shiny copper color? If not, I would recommend new MARINE GRADE battery wires, as it will happen again, sooner than later.
