Re: My 1968 Glastron GT160 rebuild......

My stringer only had spot tabbing in 3 or 4 places about 8" wide....the rest of it was left exposed. I think in the early years it was pretty common not to get things glassed in well under the deck. I don't know if they were in a hurry, didn't think the boats would last that long or what.

20 years later Glastron seemed to do a better job. My stringers were wrapped in well wetted roving. Still, there was gaps in lots of places and the rot came.

Great progress here. You are going to have one nice looking boat.

Get a free photobucket acct, upload your pix in bulk there, then copy the IMG
Code:
for each pix you want to post in your thread, and paste that IMG [code] into your post.

The IMG [code] will look something like this when you paste it into your thread:
IMG]http://i1246.photobucket.com/albums/gg61/Keystone_zps33361088.jpg[/IMG

Pix end up looking like this:
[IMG]http://forums.iboats.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=210433&d=1378174209[/IMG]

When you get to the major demo & put back, it makes it easier to follow along w/ large pix & text IN your post instead of having to open & view attached pix.

Re: My 1968 Glastron GT160 rebuild......

great progress.....the two halves look really funny by themselves, lol, the hull looks kind of boring, and the upper half looks "space age"...like it could fly off at any moment! Looks like you had a great day for it!

Ok Gents, its been a couple weeks, hate it when being gainfully employed gets in the way of my screw around time.......

Figure it would tackle the rotten transom first. after plenty of cutting and hacking, out it came - I bet this weight 80 lbs!!!!

Hey Gents, messing around trying to figure out photobucket pix posting....

IMG958877.jpg

Also trying to figure out what to do with the trailer, the boat is too small for a tandem axle (and this one is a tilt trailer also).....might switch it with the trailer the GX-150 is on since that one will be sold when Im done with this restore....

Re: My 1968 Glastron GT160 rebuild......

Thanks for the tips on staying itch free!! Question for you guys that have been down this road..... once the old tabs are gone, flip and start the hull rework (fixing gouges and dents, prime and paint) or install new stringers/transom/deck???

Re: My 1968 Glastron GT160 rebuild......

I would rebuild the substructure before flipping to fix the botom...you don't want to chance getting the hull twisted out of shape....they get quite flimsey...

Re: My 1968 Glastron GT160 rebuild......

I would tend to agree with trooper since you have the hull split. I didn't split mine, and flipped the bare hull several times. Yours is going to be flimsy with the cap off, so unless you have a lot of help I would try to get the structure back in and the top back on before flipping. Actually I would have the structure in and the top more or less ready for paint. Flip it, do the prep and body work for the bottom, paint it....carefully flip it once the paint has dried tape off the bottom and then finalize the prep on top and paint it. FYI if you spray, I would tape it off from the hull seam to the floor....making it air tight. You will be amazed at where the overspray can end up if you do a shotty tape job. you can buff it out, but why not spend an extra hour and $20 on tape, paper, and plastic. Spend the time on your prep, it will pay off on paint day!

Re: My 1968 Glastron GT160 rebuild......

Thanks Gents, stringers, transom and deck it is..... I was very surprised at how thin the side walls really are, maybe 1/8 inch max!!!

Jen (the real boss) got into me pretty solid about using a respirator and better safety glasses......so now, I think the boat will be my weight loss program as well........Full respirator , goggles, completely covered up skin......guess she is already tired of me complaining about itching to death. God help her, she has put up with my crap for 11 years, sounds like she wants a few more....

Re: My 1968 Glastron GT160 rebuild......

That does sound pretty thin, but looks like it has lasted this long :D. I do think some of the restores on here get a tad over built, but that does beat under built for sure! Here is a tip: don't tell your friends that you need help flipping a boat. Tell them that you are going to have the Sooners on and to come over early for free beer and food. Trust me they fall for it every time :cheer2:
