Looks good! I just used marinetex for the first time to fill some pretty serious pitting. I am impressed with it. seems like good stuff.

Your right, m tex is good stuff but the color being gray and it sanding like wood are a bit off. I used it for some hull dent work too, I hope it doesn't need a belt sander with 60 grit to "sand like wood".

Started some motor repairs and maintenance this weekend, the paint striping needed a break.

Lower unit off and the double seals replaced on the drive shaft. Found out my iboats lower unit seal kit was missing some "always replace" grommets for the water pump pipe and tube. Then I see the water pumps plastic housing was starting to erode and looked like it was crumbling at the outlet. Sigh.. another order placed for more parts. Have fuel pump rebuild kit to do yet while waiting. Speaking of fuel... the marine mechanic that rebuilt my carbs a couple years ago didn't put a gasket back in my 2 part air box. Now I have the entire engine compartment is coated with outboard oil, gas and dirt to clean up. Will the fun never end!

Bow eye repair. The PO had torn the original bow eye through the hull and then had a patch welded over the outside. Then the same bow eye was moved lower and backed once again with small washers and nuts. Do the same thing twice and expect a different outcome the 2nd time? I used a piece of the laminated transom I had cut out, shaped it to the hull so it would pull from a large area. Drilled, primed and painted to seal it up. Put in a new 3.5 inch 7/16" stainless bow eye and used 5200 to keep the nuts on solid and on the bolt shafts at the hull to make it water tight. You can see the upper area that had a plate welded on the outside of the hull. I filled the 4 holes with JB and then sealed with gluvit.

Re: 1978 Sea Nymph SS160 resto

My resto buddy had some free time this weekend so... We got the sides of the hull striped of the 2 coats of paint down to bare aluminum. The only thing left is a green haze in areas from the original SE primer. Now I need some muscle to help do the flip so we can strip the bottom and I can finish the keel repairs.

The garage fridge.... well here's what's inside.

I keep my resto buddy happy and never thirsty as you can see. Frosty mugs above and 34 degree on tap that's fresh with plenty of CO2.[/QUOTE]

Now that is some beautiful aluminum!:D

Re: 1978 Sea Nymph SS160 resto

Update on my progress, last week I went back to work on an easy does it light duty. This weekend I officially started on the rebuild, I hope anyway. The paint stripping was completely finished, the boat was scrubbed and pressure washed. I also put some water in the bottom and checked for leaks on my creeper underneath, nothing even weeped a drop. I used some JJV aluminum cleaner on all the above deck aluminum and man does it shine now.

I got all the lower unit seals replaced, water pump rebuilt and a new thermostat in the Johnson. I fitted an awesome addition to the transom, a CMC PT130 tilt/trim. Tested the unit with power and made sure all the holes were correct.

I cut the wood pieces for the console and fitted it before sanding and putting a coat of Zinsser oil base primer, paint and then spar on.

I remembered when doing the dry fit on the PT unit that my transom cap was mangled, cracked and in 2 pieces.

y4mbmBq30Ba8orjAyEg1tXWov8bJ1kSx91t7-zFBXIKqH17Hs6SYHe9hkYDHGuav8qV8UgA2hCkgBN4Ac5mPoCBORF72uGgvPA9XcXkIgvNvbRAoJcGljMB2wwaoSJA6ytKd90AjFbJwsdH_z12jPQquyN0YPGr9eRtjdQQnbCscOWWURlnIIT3DNJHIzyE-ZRsDhyS4lkusaOfn7NHYrl_WA

I had to come up with a new cap so I put my thinking cap on and invited my resto buddy over to help me think. This is what I came up with -

y4mIo2QD1wz8bTQGLSp2fGxInLtxTa3-YFs4iDr2QYKkcx2B0iJensHCxPPatv0U_xwE8Cq_Qf8rkmxoA37_Z7HPAzOu4rlj0CH21p3qlQ_wbpkA3yJwllpWF2mv5IzajOISzF7vDBo1tPXYQe0d1rodrWGr0Ev63XR6UtT-3Qk5IIYO1ipYzKQ8_f1G2tJ83aU4yxFEceRep-X65KL9ylpDQ

Material I used was 1/16th" aluminum stock. With the transom wood in place and secured, we laid the aluminum down on top, started the bend cold with the shape of the transom and secured it with screws in the middle. Then we applied heat with a torch and used a round steel bar and rolled it downward to create the bend. Once the flat piece was bent it fit nice and tight, then it was secured with screws above the bend and below. Then came the tricky part, heating the aluminum up just right while using a hammer to slowly bang the bend into the aluminum over the edge. There was some smoke from the old transom wood so I suggest if someone tries this to do it before the transom wood is all done up.

Cost 18 bucks.

Now I'm on to priming the hull.

Good progress !

I was wondering what function the fan was for in the pic, beer wasnt cold enough ?, 240v heat was too much ?, but upon reading further guess it was to get rid of some of that smoke.

Nice fabrication job on the cap....very impressive.

Actually the fan was running to dry out the water hiding in the ribs after the pressure wash. It took some time to get the water out of the chines too before I could do some primer.

Update with photos:

Degreased and pressure washed the motor. I tell you what, Superclean works better than Gunk or anything else I have ever used. I hooked up my garden hose to the hot side of my washing machine and used piping hot water with a pressure wand. The Johnson is nearly spotless and ready to be sanded, primed and painted. I got the lower unit back on and all the parts put in place under the cowl.

Pulled the wheels off my trailer, got new 14" wheels and tires. The grease seals in the back were gone and there was a huge groove in the spindles. I filled the grooves with quick metal and sanded it smooth with emery cloth. Now waiting for the seals to come in at the parts house. Wired wheeled the trailers bad spots and then gave it a fresh coat of paint. I pulled off the fenders, sanded them and they now have some self etching primer drying.

A coat of Spar urethane on some of the wood, side rails, console pieces and transom. Went to the lumber yard and picked up my 4 sheets of marine ply for the bottom decking. Had to go with 1/2" ply, Boise stopped making the 5/8" marine ply I found out due to lack of demand.

Working on getting some of the stripe decals off my cowl, they have a thin metal backing, the sticker came right off with heat but nothing would touch the metal that stayed behind. Finally I got brave and tried some aircraft remover and what do you know, 2 coats and it took it right off and didn't do anything to the paint or fiberglass.

Paint is due to come in fed ex on Tuesday, I can't wait to get that done so I start on the rebuild inside.

Busy weekend for me, now it's time for a frosty mug.

Re: 1978 Sea Nymph SS160 resto

A couple of set backs, paint has gone from delivery date 3/12 to NA on Fed Ex and it hasn't been seen since is left NJ. Axle seals, OMG, really, they are proprietary to ez loader trailers only and can't be purchased at a parts house. Good thing they are based out of Spokane which is near by me, well less than 200 miles. Been passing the time after work sanding the motor down.

Re: 1978 Sea Nymph SS160 resto

Took the post office almost a week to find an incorrectly delivered package. Fortunately, it made it to me the last day before the seller was shipping a free replacement. It's great dealing w/ 'known' sellers sometimes, even if at a premium. USPS suggested I go out & look to see if it was on the ground under my mailbox, in case I dropped it getting the mail out of the box & didn't notice, and to ask my neighbors.....

Hope FedEx locates it somewhere between NJ & you, basically the whole lower 48 :cold::blue:, soon & gets it headed your way......

Bummer on the axle seals. Those are at a premium too I bet........

It took a couple days sanding after work but I got the motor primed today.

Fed Ex delivered my paint to the neighbors, one street over but I found it on their porch. Put the first coat of beige on tonight, quite the learning experience using the marine topside paint, I'm glad I started on the the bottom where nobody could see it. Oh and rivets really suck up loads of paint and then run when your not looking.

y4mxQiK-ciS3_RnwmpfaHFKqVMUqgxEQht3DedgfNlnACx1XuGDqUP3Xhe6Ehgk6D1Zf5HnCA3n2W_aoIW0i1NkdM-yAq9qNKdaL226RZwHzzvFMLq5uSHWUzwZPxuUqLPwFlquP25B61Mq2B1u9EpnqXjvs7wPpgDZr3PVLX6wF14uF9WOWdhnF86brG6JT2CnhyY0_q7otwVWBw43W8V93w

Now I hope I have enough to finish the job, it didn't seem to go as far as I thought.

Re: 1978 Sea Nymph SS160 resto

H2O Man,

Nice job, especially hanging in there while everyone is throwing curve balls at your head.

I spent a few years of my career in the anti-friction business, bearings and seals so here is a bit of .02

On the worn axle shaft: Make sure you apply grease on lip of seal. Seals work by riding on a thin film of lubrication. Your repair will provide a bit of a rough surface for seal lip to ride on so might see some fast wear.

You can get a speedi-sleeve that is designed just for your situation. CR or Chicago Rawhide is trade name of a seal mfr. they were purchased by SKF bearings a while back but the name "Speedi-sleeve" name is CR's trade name. National seals is another mfr and is part of Federal Mogul. The also offer a similar type of shart saver.

If you measure OD of axle where seal rides that is about all you need if you call a bearing distributor in your neck of the woods. Auto part chains are also distributors for Fed Mogul and SKF but the folks tend not to be as knowledgable about these items.

How far do you drive to launch the boat?

Also, it is just me but I dont believe seal is only avail through OEM. If you end up checking with a bearing distributor I am betting they have them...

Nice work as always.

Re: 1978 Sea Nymph SS160 resto

Thanks for the advice SG, yeah I put a light coat of grease on the spindle and seals. I sanded the repair down very smooth so I hope it seals up. I saw new spindles were 18 bucks but need to cut the old ones off and weld new on. A speedi sleeve I was told would be 40 bucks per side so I opted for 6 bucks for quick metal and I will keep an eye on the them. If I see the seals loosing grease again I will most likely replace the spindles or more than likely the whole axle.

They're under a $150 complete from Tractor Supply. No brainer if you start to have issues again.

Too funny ez, I just got back from the Big R and saw the axle and hub assembly I need and it was even in stock for $150. No brainer for sure! I towed my trailer with me on the trip to see if everything was good. No problems but if it leaks any grease it's time for the new axle and hubs.

Trailer is now restored with new side rails and rub pads, paint, tires / wheels, swing up jack, safety chains.
