Vinyl/Canvas repair

I am restoring a 1965 Owens Sedan cruiser 32?. Can?t find much information on the boat. One area I need some help with is the outside cabin roof, both the main cabin and the roof above the v berth on the outside have a covering over wood that is ripping. Looks like a vinyl canvas. Also a panel on each side has the same covering. It needs replaced. I was wondering what was the best approach, replace the vinyl or remove and finish with paint. To paint I would need to seal the wood but might look ok if done right. The vinyl approach could be easy if the sections could be removed. I can?t see how to remove the parts covered with vinyl. Has anyone seen this repaired and how it was done? Any info would be appreciated.

Great idea here is one area needing repair hope you can see the rip. The roof over the main cabin and v berth are covered in vinyl, should it be removed and painted or can it be replaced/, see attachedView attachment 110260
