And isn't it interesting that they all look about the same too - dirty, wet, nasty, crapola.

Except for our pour in foam brothers, it's even worse for them.

Not sure what the old record was for a teardown on a tin cuddy but you just raised the bar;)

You will be very happy to see that she will be shiny and new-looking before you know it. Everything looks like it's in great shape structurally on the hull outside and in, so you have found a great one to restore in my opinion.

Like EZ says, powerwash, clear a few limber holes, re-rivet a couple, gluvit and you are almost caught up to jasoutside.:D

Nice work, and thanks for being a motivational force for the rest of us tin men.:)

Keep in mind that you do have the trailer already done, and you started out with a strange white thing sticking out the transom.:p:D

I/O's are gross :p:p:p

I/O might be gross, but all that 40 years of grease is still in the boat, all that squeezed out, old over greasing, grease on an o/b falls into our pristine lakes.:D;)

Curb alert!!! Free fuel tank for grabs.:D Must have been rotted out, hope you took measurements.

Nice progress. Kills me to see mine under a tarp waiting for snow.

Alpheus, I think you should mention we here in Va have had weather in the 70's and sunny. That gives you/us a big advantage over our northern friends.:D

Re: 1969 Chieftain Restoration

I don't like it when its that warm because the !@#$% mosquitoes are out too.

If I ever win the lottery I will devote millions of dollars towards research to have scientists develop a mosquito that is over 6' tall and weighs more than 250 lbs so I can walk up to it, look it in the eyes and punch it right in the face.

I hate mosquitoes!!!

Re: 1969 Chieftain Restoration

I understand the mosquito problem. The first boat I started on was at the beginning of summer. None of the "gents" here gave me any warning and I was too excited to use my common sense. I discovered ants (lots) and wasps (LOTS) and other interesting critters that were living in the boat.
The bright side is we don't have the conditions of our northern brothers. We don't have to shovel snow out away from the boat and then shovel snow OUT of the boat. Its all in the fun!!!:D

Re: 1969 Chieftain Restoration

Today I started removing paint with a wire wheel so I could see the screw heads. Old Joe really slathered this boat with allot of thick paint. Its almost an 1/8th of an inch thick in some places.

Here you can see how thick it is.

I then took the wire wheel to the edge of the out drive cutout and found some corrosion. I think I will clean this up and rivet a nice patch around the whole cutout.

Re: 1969 Chieftain Restoration

I took off the rubrail and got tired of removing flat head screws, so I started taking on the cabin.

As I was digging up front I found Mercruiser service manuals 1&2 and I also found a couple of pre-bent rods. After putting them together I noticed that they fit into a couple of plates at the rear of the boat. I think they are used for water skiing or pulling tubes.

Here are a couple of before and after pics of the cabin. I drilled out all of the rivets holding the deck in and took them out in pieces that I can use for templates.

Now that I have the front all gutted here is a pic of the back.
