Re: 29' Carter Safari

got some more wood out this afternoon, , there is still a very thin film of wood left on the fibreglass, i was experimenting abit and a wirebrush on grinder works very well, but it doesnt leave the fibreglass completely smooth, is this a problem? or should i go back to the old sandpaper...

I'm no boat builder compared with the dudes here but I've personally liked a 24 grit disc on my angle grinder for that kind of thing

Re: 29' Carter Safari

Well, its been a blizzard all night, still is, woke up this morning thinking 'O ****' when i remembered the 400 liters of water in the holding tank of the boat. With a high today of -7 that isnt good. So i went out and sure enough its all frozen solid. i cranked up the propane stove, and 2 electric space heaters and soon enough the cabin was like 40 degrees celcius, and after about an hour the water started flowing through the taps. Completely drained now...

i think i may have busted the drinking water filter thingy, but thats not a huge deal, the system still pressurizes, and i cannot hear any other leaks.
close call...

Thats going to be a really great boat when done. Are you going to redo the cabin interior?

Re: 29' Carter Safari

victoria got like 15cm, we got about 25 in the end... which is a fair bit for us...

we are keeping the original volvo penta 280 drives. they are in perfect shape still. no point in replacing what is already good.

Hopefully it will get warmer out, it was snowing up-island yesterday and we are supposed to get 5-10cm here at mid-island this week.

Re: 29' Carter Safari

well, we got our rebuilt starters back from the shop the other day, i went to mount them today and realized that we needed the flywheels off the old engines in order to mount he starters inline(how we need them) rather then offset(how the new engines had them), so i pulled one of the old engines back into the shop, and to my surprise it was relativly easy to remove the old wheels, and withen about 2 hours i had it all swapped around on one engine, by that point it was too dark to move the other engine into the shop so i cant swap the second one tonight.

Re: 29' Carter Safari

We have sourced out the fibreglass and resin, wood we will get through my dad as he is a contractor, just a case of money now. This afternoon we are going to build up one of the engines and see if we can get it to run on the shop floor! :D Maybe that sound will be enough to get us to sell the shirts off our backs to get this thing in the water! :p

Re: 29' Carter Safari

Here are afew more pics of the first engine, its almost ready to run. I discovered that the previous owner had modified the wiring abit, so i changed it all back to the stock way since i have wired the boat and helm for the stock mercruiser system.

We have also decided our goal is July first to have this thing running in the water. The interior may not be done(its alright how it is, check pic in first post), but we want to get new uppholstry and some entertainment system upgrades:p, but we arent made of money and want to use it this summer, then either slowly tinker with the interior throughout the summer, or pull it out next winter and do the interior then.

The rust on the manifold isnt as bad as it looks in the pic and will be scrapped off and repainted.
