Re: 29' Carter Safari

We are replacing the old crusaiders with some mercruisers

I see. I thought the old motors were volvo penta since they are painted red and look like volvo exhaust mani's.

the outdrives are volvo penta 280's

Those are good drives, I've had a couple old VP oudrives, still do in fact.

I just noticed a few things you may already know in terms of changing over the necessary parts from the old motors. Thats why I mentioned not to throw anything away. You may be able to sell some of you leftovers.:)

Keep up the good work!!

Re: 29' Carter Safari

Well, some bad news. My dad and i were working on getting the second intermediate unit out of the transom, and the seal broke around the transom sheild, so we figured mineaswell just take them out, it would be easier to paint with them out anyways.

Well, that revieled this nasty sight

Re: 29' Carter Safari

Well, i spent about 2 hours getting set up and starting the big job. Had to clear all the wires out of the way and get the remainder of the stuff attached to the transom off. Then a proceeded to do about 12 core samples all over the transom and engine mounts, it seems the rot is all centered at each T hole. the rest of the transom is decent(which is why my first test seemed success full:( )The stringers and engine mounts are all fine. *phew*

here are afew pics..

You guys are crazy. I'm 21 and taking on a 19' Bayliner which is a nightmare itself. You have my respect, and best of luck

here is what the wood looks like, you can see how you could be fooled.

i think i am going to attempt what Oops did and pull the whole unit off in one peice.

Re: 29' Carter Safari

got a fair chunk of transom out, the center is pretty much down to the fibreglass. Oops's method would not work because we cant seperate at all at the top, so we cut out big squares with the skill saw at the correct depth, then wonderbar'ed it out...

Re: 29' Carter Safari

i did it from the inside, and made sure i was not in the fibreglass. How do you take a core sample? i dont really want to drill into it and potentionall go right through?

there is one pic of the interior in my first post, hasnt changed much, just ripped all the old curtains down, and taken out the upphosltry.

Today i syphined out the old fuel, there wasnt alot in it, and it had an orangey color to it, but was still clear. Probably just abit of color from the copper pickup tube. or it was dyed.

our plans arent too exciting. just local cruising and stuff for now, would like to visit the west coast at some point, and maybe make afew stops down by friday harbour and such. might do some diving off it, etc...

We are hopeing to have it in the water for next summer.

im off bright and early tomorrow(4am) to seattle to pickup our new engines(rebuilds)! Pics will follow.

Put a stop on your drill bit (it is a ring that goes on the drill bit and senches down by a twist nut.) That will eliminate the possibility of possibly drilling right though set the stop to go like half an inch should give ya an idea on what the wood looks like.

i like calhere's idea.. you can even measure it than put a peice of electrical tape on the bit to show you when to stop... i use that alot.. but its a great idea cal has

Re: 29' Carter Safari

got some more wood out this afternoon, , there is still a very thin film of wood left on the fibreglass, i was experimenting abit and a wirebrush on grinder works very well, but it doesnt leave the fibreglass completely smooth, is this a problem? or should i go back to the old sandpaper...
