Looking for advice on repairing this...it is about a foot long. Any product and procedure recommended?

I am thinking of sanding it down and laying in more fiberglass? sand it smooth. Or is there a better way?

rest of hull will be sanded and re-coated with bottom paint.

Thanks for looking.

You're on the right track.. laying new glass is the correct fix.

You will want to grind the area down to fresh glass and then grind around the repair area at least a few inches and taper it.

It's hard to tell how deep it is in the picture but you will want to build the thickness of the repair with 1708 if you use polyester resin or 1700 if you use epoxy... then cover those with 2 layers of csm to stop print thru..

You want the last couple layers to be slightly bigger than the one below. The last layer or so should be big enough to cover the extra few inches you sanded around the repair... after that, you have a lot of sanding to do...

It's going to be tough to match the old profile since it's on a strake but do the best you can and sand and fair it to the final shape before paint...

Also remember, the fish will be the only ones to see the repair.

Thanks for the feedback. The boat will be in fresh water, which repair would be preferred? 1708 or 1700?

Is she left in the water or trailered? I'd recommend Polyester Resin, 1.5oz CSM and 1708 biaxial fabric. If she's not left in the water for more than a week at a time, you don't have to use Bottom Paint. I'd recommend using Gelcoat after the repair is completed. Much more durable and you can just brush or roll it on. 3-4 coats and some sanding any she'll be good as new.

Trailered now, but intent is to keep her in the water for the boating season (Michigan).

BTW, anyone have any idea what type of bottom paint is on the hull by looking at the picture? It was a Florida boat. I am thinking a good pressure wash, then proper sanding, then just apply a fresh coat of bottom paint made for fiberglass hull.

What would you do?

No way to tell but...ALL bottom Paint is NASTY stuff. You MUST wear a GOOD respirator when sanding it off. It'll probably be pretty thick. You don't have to get it totally off but the more the better and make sure that what's left is adhered well. This might be informative
