Is clear lac. like clear coat? I've heard it's a nightmare to repair/match if it is. IDK?

Good question , I`m not a painter so I don`t know ether .I believe lacquer is applied a lot thinner than a clear coat . Maybe someone here could answer . Thank you

Lacquer is essentially beetle husks dissolved in alcohol.

not sure on its water-resistance.

This is the paint I used to paint the boat. The lacquer is made to top coat for a glossier finish. I just hope it doesn`t blister and eat the under paint.

seems lile a urethane or polyurethane would work better. Lacquers usually look good but typically aren't that durable. but i haven't used that product either.

Generally, lacquer is too solvent hot for over enamel, the solvents eat the alkyd, but that product appears to be formulated to work, but i suspect that the durability will suffer.....Acrylic Urethanes have mostly replaced lacquers these days...we cant even legally spray lacquers in most states.

Maybe Try a test patch and let it cure for a few weeks 1st.

I was really worried about the lacquer blistering or lifting the paint so I gave it three weeks to cure. I scuffed the paint with scotch bright as instructions and sprayed 5.5 to 7.5 mil wet coat of lacquer. It looks good and hasn`t blistered or cracked yet.Instructions state if you want a second coat wait 24 hours and re coat. I`m not going to take a chance and push my luck. I`m ready to flip as soon as I can rebuild it`s trailer. The trailer is a 1956 mastercraft . I`m replacing everything, winch -jack -wheels and tires- all new rollers- the lights are good. Extending the tung two feet with new coupling. I have it disassembled and wire brushed to bare metal for primer and paint. I`m undecided as to color. Thanks for looking. What would look good for this boat ?

I'd second white. Easy to paint, hides a lot of imperfections, and pretty much goes with everything. As Sam said above, an accent would be nice with the red. Maybe even just the frame in white and the fenders in red if you have the paint for it. Otherwise some pinstripes would be nice.

When you paint your Erector Set trailer ( you aren't kidding about disassembled), white is a good flavor. It goes with anything and with an old trailer rust shows very visibly if any of the channels are thin and coming through.

Red pinstripes to set it off and maybe some Mastercraft decals. Fiberglassics even has a 1956 Mastercraft brochure for ideas. http://www.fiberglassics.com/library/index.php?title=Mastercraft_(Trailers)

That is pretty cool, you could have some decals made fairly economically at a local sign shop.

Thanks everyone, I was thinking white with red fenders or rust-oleum hammered silver with red fenders. When my father gave me the boat he also gave my the brochure for the trailer. He bought the CU750 model 142.00.If you convert the 1956 prices to 2019 it would cost 1337.22. That seems high

I would go with the original color, from the brochure, black and red.

Yes, ..... that is really nice having that original literature with it.

Both the boat and trailer are looking great!

I have the trailer painted and almost completely reassembled but ran into a problem. I purchased every thing I thought I needed to rebuild -retro fit the trailer about a month ago . I bought new hubs with bearings and also new wheels with tires mounted. When I tried to install the hubs they were to large or my spindles were to short . I returned them and just decided to rebuild the original hubs. I had to order the bearings and race and seal because nothing on this trailer is standard to trailers build now. As I clean everything of 63 years of old grease and dirt I realize the wheel bolt pattern is also different than the new wheels.I returned the wheels and tires and now need to break down and repaint my old wheels and buy tires. The trailer has never had a spare tire, I never realized I couldn`t use the one from my other trailer or just grab one at local chain store. The original wheel is an 8" with 5.70 tires and 2 5/8 c/c bolt pattern. I have looked with no success to find a wheel to use for a spare tire. Anyone know of a source for a wheel as described?

I`m to far in now. Bearings have been shipped. I would really like to have a drive on trailer where the boat sits between the fenders.
