New Furniture Layout

Has anyone ever tried converting the old layout of pre 90's runabout from the jump seat doghouse layout to a modern sundeck and bench configuration? Has anyone ever used pontoon furniture for this?

Obviously weight is a factor. I could replace wood with poly, hdpe or starboard where applicable. Are there other considerations in properly framing out a full length engine compartment with pop up cover?

I have a 1989 Sea Ray 200BR

Current Layout - This is a 180BR. You could add 2ft to the separation b/n doghouse and back to back seats.

Possible Layout 2 - Remove Back to Back seats, replace with dual captains chairs and bench:

Mine is a 87. All interior options you mention were available. I got a brochure somewhere for it. If you take your rear seats and set them up on the upper teak. It already makes a huge sundeck.

Its definitely possible... As Chev said, a lot of boats came with both configurations. My only concern is on an 18' boat, I would think it would be pretty tight to have back to back seats AND a full sundeck configuration. Personally, i would vote for option 2 if you want a full sundeck. You could convert to two captain seats and you would still have seating for your boats max capacity with a full rear bench seat. My 20' boat has a max capacity of 8, but I can tell you for a fact, it would be WAY too tight with 8 adults, so I would configure your boat for comfort, and not the most number of people.

I just looked in the brochure. Sundeck and rear bench came with 2 pedestal seats. On the 18 foot boats.

I was also considering this.

My boat is the 200BR so it is actually 20'10". I wonder if I could simply use pontoon furniture. It would be lighter than wood and I would have to measure and choose the correct components but is this absurd?

I will be making the same thing. I have a captains chair and will be doing the the bench seat with sundeck. One side will have the wraparound u-shape design. I will have to redo the side panels anyways and will install cup holders.

Chris51280 Do you have any idea of guidelines or requirements to convert from a doghouse to a sundeck full cover? Perhaps comparable models to mimic?

I just looked at a lot of different boats with a sundeck and gow I would build one. So it of them have the sundeck wrap around so the will also work as the backrest of the rear bench. Some are made so the bench works as the support of the sundeck. Either a split deck or full size across. I looked at baylinerchuck and his chaparral assembly when ge put it back together. He mounted the bench on the deck with angle brackets to be able to remove it.

My 1999 Mariah 20' custom seating design from factory. I can't find it anywhere in the brochures but the original owner said it was factory, sorta ;-) I am not happy with it because it has no 1st mate seat.
Wife doesn't like that I call it "Bordello seating" ;-)

As someone with a gutted boat replacing stringers and deck, this has been a great thread to see some different furniture possibilities. :thumb:

I'm using pontoon furniture to outfit my 1984 Sea Ray CC, check my signature link. I really like the layout, but still need to figure-out how to fabricate my sundeck... I'll figure it out!
