Heck I would glass right over them. Extra glass but nothing to eva rot. EVA! Dang that's what's I would do Says I..!!

Believe me I would love to but from my research it sounds like it wouldn't work due to lack of adhesion to the foam...

What will you be doing about the tank to bilge drain? How was yours designed from the factory? Did you have a drain?

I am not sure what you mean. From the fuel tank compartment? Half circles are cut out at the bottom of the bulkheads.

Yes. It has been a debate on a couple of posts if the tank compartment is supposed to drain into the bilge area.

I understand your question now. From the factory it does. Not sure how else you would direct water from the entire boat to the bilge area without going through the tank compartment unless you had a sealed "pipe" running from in front of the front bulkhead straight back to the bilge. But then any water getting in the fuel compartment has no where to go.I plan to have a hatch there which didn't exist before so I am sure water will get in. I guess you would need a separate bilge in the fuel area with a skimmer....

I believe the idea is the foam is only for making/shaping your glass to. Add'l glass is now your strength, not the foam.
There are boat structures with just cardboard shapes that are fiber glassed over.
Also boat structures with hollow stringers. The add'l glass is the strength.

Sorry all that I haven't posted lately. I have several photos I want to upload but need to find the time to resize them before I can upload them. I am just about ready to install the transom and stringers (as I suspected the whole transom was in fact bad. I have all the pieces cut and ready to go in. Does anyone have any recommendations for a good place to get Mercruiser parts? I have been looking on wholesale marine but wondered if people had good luck with any shops. Thanks for the help.

Here are a few photos. I will need to get a few with everything ground out. The stringers went together perfectly but I will need to confirm that they actually fit in the boat now! I powder coated the emblems grey which I am not sure about, but the original gold wouldn't match anything else in the boat.

looks like a big jigsaw puzzle. I did each separately. I rough cut all and will make fine cuts once I see it in the boat with the foam pieces underneath.

very nice looking wood, are you going to wrap each piece separately before assembling to keep any future possible rot in one piece?

I am not planning on wrapping each. I wouldn't be able to assemble it then. Everything will be completed wrapped and covered with resin and glass. From the factory there were only tabs with no caps which explains the extensive rot. Throughout every part of this project I will have water in mind and will do what I can to seal every screw and what not. I plan on being creative with things like seats, battery and trim pump mounts and plan to bring bolts from the bottom up and resin them in place before installing the items. So I should have very few wood type screws penetrating the deck aside from thise that will secure the deck in which I will use marine adhesive sealant. This boat must have been full of water for some period. It will be maintained after it is done so I am sure it will last. Do many people wrap each stringer with glass before installing? I thought about coating them all with resin but not sure yet.

I don't know if many people do but i wrapped every piece that went into the boat before it went in. If it slows it down at all period it is worth the time to me. Sealing a piece of wood takes a day. But it is so easy to do. Gutting and grinding not so much.

So if it buys me 5-10 years I be gone by then anyway.

I received all of my supplies. I went with Fiberglass supply depot and they were great to deal with. The guy who helped me, Jose, even told me about a coupon code and all the items arrived within 3 or 4 days. The prices were better than anywhere else I could find. The transom is now in and I will be working on tabbing it in and bonding the engine mounts this afternoon. Hopefully I will have the stringers in this weekend if all goes well. Here are a few photos of the stringers in for a test fit and the progress on the transom.

Looks good! One thing to consider is a flat shield on the outside of the boat around the keyhole to prevent the clamps from leaving undulations in the hull as you clamp down on the transom. With only three boards taking the load of your clamping, you really want to avoid flexing the hull in this area. A flat sheet of 3/4" plywood that extends beyond the keyhole about 3-4" would help distribute the load and avoid any waves in hull as you pull the clamps tight.

Thanks guys,
I had already installed the transom prior to reading your suggestion about a plate but that seems like a good idea. The transom is all in and glassed as well as the engine mounts. I still need to tab those but they will be done with the stringers which I hope to complete this weekend. Here are some photos of the progress made this week. I have used 2.5 gallons of resin so far; any additional guesses on how much will be needed total deck and all? I think I will be close with 15 gallons. Maybe need to get a few more.

Hmmmmm I am just about ready to open my 3rd 5 Gallon pail of eeeeeeepoxy this weekend. I will probably use 3/4's of it. My boat is a 18' doing pretty well everything you are.

So I may be a little shy considering I have 2 bulkheads and quite a few more stringers. I am confident that 12.5 gallons will get us through the stringer install. A second order isn't a problem.

I started following your project and am about a quarter of the way through it. It is very addicting to start reading these and seeing the various ways of tackling these projects. Great work so far. I look forward to reading your entire forum.

BTW I noticed that your boat had a Wilson Marine sticker. Are you near me? I live in Ypsilanti just west of Ann Arbor....
