Just picked up this 1982 Sea Nymph CC-171. It is my project for the spring and hopefully will be enjoyed summer 2018. So far just cleaning her out (Especially the soaked foam flotation), and stripping her down in preparation for a much needed rebuild.

:welcome: aboard seathings,

Those SNs are great fishing boats, looks like you have a good start on getting her to the clean slate stage.

Slow and steady, keep at her and the forward progress. The new transom is the start of things going back together and is always a good sign.

Thanks Waterman, had to make a new inner transom aluminum forward plate. The old one was corroded through. Soaked the marine panels in Total Boat penetrating epoxy and going to sandwich them together with 5200. Braising exterior holes with aluminum rod and going to drop in lake to check for leaks before paint job.Thinking about getting a box of large pool noodles (Closed Cell Foam) and cut to fit for flotation below the deck before floor install. Boat getting a new custom glassed center consul. After wet foam was removed the boat was about 800 lbs lighter.

Some updated photos of hull prep before paint with Total Boat Aluminum hull paint. I stripped old epoxy that had been applied and found some pitting from galvanic corrosion due to water unable to escape that had leaked though from the inside of the hull and became trapped under the senseless use of epoxy below the waterline on the outer hull. Seams and rivets should have been reset and sealed inside.

Ohh boy a naked boat! ;)

I tell you what, more people do those types of hull repairs than do it right, the Starcraft FB and other pages is full of bad advice telling guys to smear that type of goop on their boats. I get tired of seeing and trying to correct them but it doesn't always go right. :grumpy:

Woot woot! A CC restore :) I can’t wait to see the progress. So far so good:). I am doing a restore and going with a custom CC myself. Looking forward to your ideas.

Been a while so I'm updating the progress on the CC - 171. Got the hull done and painted. Replaced the transom and coated it with Jamestown Dist. Penetrating epoxy. Used pool noodles for flotation in back boxes and will also use them under the new floor. Going to install underwater stern lights and interior courtesy lights when finished Trashed the old center console and built my own. Glassing that now. Went a little wider and a little taller for comfort. Going to install a cooler under front console seat. Going to carbon fiber the gauge panel and install a new Garmin Echomap plus 73SV, gauges, marine radio and West Marine stereo. Will be changing out steering cables for baystar hydraulics. Engine is an Evinrude 70, 2 stroke. Rebuilt the lower unit moving to the rest this summer with an offset hydraulic tilt trim. Boat name is "Piece of Ship". I have attached updated photos. Virus willing maybe actually hit the bay this year.....

Welcome back, looks like you've got some headway on the SN.

I would recommend not using pool noodles for anything other than what they were designed for and for boat flotation rigid foam board is a very good product.

Thanks, I will compare the two. I am aranging my flooring to be compartmentalized so I can easily switch out if I decide to change the material used.

Nice job on the transom, doing the same to my cc171 right now, pulled the rotten transom out and doing the rebuild. How much epoxy did you use to coat? Did you add acetone to increase the penetration? Trying to keep the cost down and don’t want to drastically over purchase. Should all the decking get coated as well?
Thanks, this is my first resto.

I used Janestown two part penetrating epoxy. One solid coat on all panels including edges. Thin with denatured alcohol. It should go on like water. I also coated any wood on the boat including wood panels under the aft port/starboard flotation box covers, when framing my homemade CC, and floor panels. Finishing the floor tops with Jamestown total tread slip resistant deck paint. Tried to add photos of all of this but files to large.

Did you chemically strip the exterior? What kind of paint did you use?
Thanks

Haha, didn't think you painted the exterior hull with slip resistant deck paint. Do you feel its necessary to take the whole boat down to bare metal and paint up from there? I'm doing a resto on the 1990 version of this boat and thought about using aircraft paint stripper on the whole thing to go to bare metal and work up from there. Do you think that's overkill? Or just sand the original paint well and hit it with primer and top coats?
