16' k&c thermoglass transom and stringer replacement

Hi, I have a 16' K&C Thermoglass hull, which has a 130 volvo penta in/outboard. I bought it cheap hoping all I would need to do is repair the 5 or 6 small holes in the hull, then after grtting rid of the rotten deck and foam, I realized that there is a lot more work than I thought.
The stringers and the transom are soaked, and has seen a bit of rot.
Just looking for some advice, not sure what the best way to replace the transom would be. Im unsure as to the best place to make the cuts for the transom removal.
Im having difficulty posting my pics from my phone here. I keep getting a message that says "invalid file"
The transom has a ledge ontop and some metal trim going around. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

You have to make 3 post before the site lets you post pics. Then they have to be a certain size. To big is a fail still.

Pictures should be resized, and after you have 3 posts, you can upload them. Lots of threads here on iBoats that you can go through and see what folks have done to restore their boats to better than new condition. So, if you are up to it, then you have come to the right place.

welcome aboard. the others have you covered on pics (there is even a tutorial in the guidelines and rules forum)

regarding your boat. you are looking at removal of all things inside the hull and a complete gut-n-restore.

after you remove the interior, engine, wiring, etc. you will need to build a cradle for the hull, decap it and finish the demolition

keep in mind to repair your boat properly your looking at between $2500 and $3000 in materials alone just to restore the stringers/floor/transom. if the interior needs replacing, expect $2k on that

My buddy and I did a 19ft Sea Ray cuddy a few years back for about a grand. We did new stringers, floors and seats. Didn't touch the transom but I can't imagine that adding several thousand dollars. Maybe if you use seacast it would. It can be done economically if you shop carefully, plan carefully, and are handy.

Hmm, well $3000 is way above what I gigured vosts would be. What would be the biggest expense in your opinion?
I just cant see why it would cost that much! I figured around a grand.. or even less. Well heres some pics.

Well, I certainly don't know your situation, and any advice given here will not be able to consider it, but my advice would be to cut your losses. The further you go, you"ll likely find even more work needed. Is that an OMC outdrive?

So Ill need a 2x10s and other wood for stringers, then plywood gor trsnsom. After that there is resin, and fiberglass material. So I figured about $1000 to get it back in order... But Ive never done this before, so what might I be missing?

your stringers are most likely 3/4" plywood.

after doing a few boats, I dont think you can do it for $1000. $1500 was my last transom bulkhead and motor mounts when all was said and done as I only had to redo what was in the engine compartment due to a wet set of motor mounts.

every full restoration has cost at least double.

you will at a minimum spend the following
$200 on PPE (Tyvek suits, NIOSH approved respirator, gloves, goggles, etc)
$200 on saw blades, grinding wheels, other incidentals
$100 on acetone
$20 on Tite Bond III wood glue
$450 on resin (layup resin, not waxed resin. your going to need about 15 gallons of resin)
$130 on gel
$100 on EPA shipping charges
$500 on cloth/cabosil/milled fibers
$150 on containers/brushes/fiberglass rollers/dust bags for the shop vac
$200 on foam
$200 on 2x4's for your hull cradle
$200 on exterior grade plywood
$100 on hardware
$200 for the mistakes and trophies that we all make and end up throwing away because the resin kicked too early

dont forget the two grinders you will most likely burn up from sucking in fiberglass dust. I use harbor freight grinders and circular saws for this reason.

I don'the think you can do it for much under $2000. Unless you don'the count the small purchases of various shop supplies you realize you forgot or ran out of. Rollers, brushes, mixing cups, trays, wiping rags, acetone, marine sealant, gloves, it all adds up pretty quickly. I'm in for a little over $3000 on my 19 footer, and nearing completion, but expect to spend another $100-200.
