  • Dear Community Members,

Updated 9/29/20 - Upgrades have been pushed until 10/7/20

Over the last two years, there have been updates to the environment that have introduced challenges in usability, performance, and security. Efforts to improve the technology, user interface and site performance have revealed weaknesses in the platform and outdated software our site uses. This has made it increasingly difficult and frustrating to support and upgrade to more modern reliable standards that users deserve. This is not the experience we want for the members of this community.

Members want a fast site that performs well across all devices, to be able to find relevant and interesting content, and easily share through text, images, video, and messaging on a secure platform. Our goal is to provide this user experience to all members. We will be updating to a new platform to better meet the needs of this community and allow us to provide support more efficiently. Our focus is to create a sustainable platform that performs well and loads faster on all devices while offering seamless ways to search and connect. Technology is constantly innovating - by creating an environment that we control we can maintain the site with more frequent improvements and maintenance updates.

Although change can be difficult, we are here to support you through the process. We make every effort to review existing settings and make the changes needed so the migration goes smoothly. If you notice something doesn’t seem correct once the site goes live, don’t panic! We’ll have a dedicated person monitoring as the site goes live to answer any questions and provide support through this change.

    What’s next?
When will this be happening? The plan is to put our current forums into maintenance mode (off line) at around 9am MST on 10/7/2020! The whole transition should take 30-36 hours. We recognize the user experience is slow and there are bugs from the outdated software. The sooner we can change that the better we can make the experience for you. You’ll start to see activity related to cleanup in preparation for migration very shortly. We will post an announcement to the community prior to starting the actual data migration.

We appreciate each member’s contribution to this community and look forward to an improved experience for you all.

Just acquired a 170 Horizon. Assembly required.

Introduction first. I am Randy from northern Ky by the ohio river. I grew up around boats but this is my first one.

I keep coming across this forum researching my new boat. So I figured I going be here alot and decided to join.

Now the boat in question. A 87 Four Winns 170 Horizon. And like my chevelle I got it in pieces and in boxes. The boat sat for years and years neglected.
Guy said last time out skiing it ran worse and worse until it died. He pulled the engine and outdrive. Planned on rebuilding it. Then got another boat and it just sat.

I got the engine and outdrive here a month ago. Had the engine on a stand in the shop seeing what was wrong. I got the boat itself here a week ago. Had to wait till the mud in his yard dried enough to pull it out.

I plan to fully restore the boat as I go along. New interior make it presentable. It is a 3 liter merc and I have ridden in one my buddy had I am fine with the power. I will be fishing and skiing not racing it.

So far I found a dead spark plug wire. The electronics in the distributor shorted and they are gone. A pertinex unit. It had a bad coil. Distributor knife edged the gear. And it had way to much side play in the distributor shaft. Seems Merc did not use a lower bushing in them. Or it was a factory mistake. I restored a 68 chevelle so I had lots of parts to that. I pressed in a lower bearing in the distributor housing solved that mess. It says it has 64 hours n the engine on the counter. Boat reflects that this may be right. It has no wear anywhere. Seems it just sat.

The boat its self was stored correctly with the plug out. I checked for rot all the wood looks good. Interior was badly mildewed and the exterior was moss and mildew covered from sitting under the tree for years.

I am a registered car mech and I do paint and bodywork. But am new to the gel Coat situation. And this is why I kept coming across this forum. Learning Gel coat care.

Any how I sanded it and buffed it on the extremely faded color stripe. I still got the white to do. But is looks alot better. Future post will not be so long winded. Just had a lot to catch up on this round.

I don't expect to float it this year. Shooting for next summer. But who knows if things go well.

Here some as I got it and now shots of the Barge as I call her. Never mind I just found out I have to make 3 post to do that so in the future I will. The saying on my other forums is we like pics. I assume this one is the same.

    Randy.

    Well I still haunt here.

I been on a prop buying spree since I left. Shopping the ideal for my boat prop. I have the 17 stainless it came with. I got the power2 shifting prop. I got the 19 stainless from Micky. I ran a 21 4 blade last summer. That is the cruising prop of the olympics. 6% slip all the way through the range. It just wont pull the extra blade on top end.

I found the boats sweet spot at the moment. A 20 pitch 3 blade aluminum. It is in the motors sweet spot on the tach about 4600-4700 range. GPS reported high speed was 42 MPH. It is faster out of the hole better acceleration all the way. Peppier just happier boat with the 3 blade. Its cruise speed it has more slip. Best all around for my boat and boating style.

So with the added weight I put in it rebuilding it. The massive amount of gear I always haul. And 2 heavy passengers. It is doing the speed it should empty, no gear with a 110 lb crackhead doing the testing for Four Winns. So I am happy with it.

There is a tree in the river from the flood. Blocking the channel. I wish the barge would need to get by and take that out.

A short clip of my baby doing 25 mph cruising along.

Hello all. Hey Archie when we gonna hear the 6 beehive run?

Thats a sweet car looks pretty solid. Here in the rust belt they all rotted away. The ZX turbo engine should make it go great. Mine go a new home with the sale of the Satellite, should help it stay nice for years to come.

This is my deal, I had 35 chevelles and who knows how many camaros and firebirds. I was buy em and break em in the gas crisis years. Then chevelles shot up in price. I moved on to camaros and firebirds. Then they did it and I got a motorcycle.

For ever I didn't have one. I had given up on them. They cost a fortune for a POS junker.

Well my brother had a 68 my car in high school my color. I just came home from the west coast. He backed it out. He had sold it. 427 4 speed posi. He looked me in the eye and said don't you want just one more.

    I guess I did.

I got the one I got as a basket case. Then I went to asia had a kid got married. Came home bought the house and raised this boy. I been tinkerin on it all along. She is my last muscle car I am sure. The dream car. All the options and things I wanted in all those patina cars I had most of my life.

I hot rodded my safari van she is my driver, I like beating mustangs in the soccer mom van. I got 4wds I play with now.

The boat I always wanted one. Just life kept getting in the way, I got this one because it had to go to get the one my brother bought. So I fixed her and a real happy with it.

The chevelle is my personal show car. I enjoy it just sitting there being perfect. 496 4 speed with a OD and a eaton pro seiries posi. 373 gear. Power steering power brakes and A/C. It is almost complete now.

Now I hang on the boat forum and watch the siren sing and catch men to bring them to the sea. As she has done to me.

Soon I will be on the river at the crack of dawn listening to the radio, snacking and fishing,

That's what I am hoping for, a low mileage original 70 Datsun 240Z just sold for and ridicules $300K. I have owned a 280Z, 280ZX and 4 300ZXs that I have driven. Drove the first 2 as daily drivers logged well over 150K miles between them, Then finally bought a really nice white with red 87 That was going to be my toy keeper. Plans changed when a mechanic who was repairing the car for failed NJ state inspections totaled it. That was 20 years ago. Wow I am old. That's how I ended up with number 4. Going out for a curies with a friend who has 2 Zs

Those oldest nissans (especially datsuns) are getting super rare and expensive... that aside, I always wanted a 300zx 2+2... cool cars.. I bet a mint one with low miles would be worth 20 to 30g in a few years

Actually this is really more about our future goals and down sizing. I am sad its gone, this to shall pass. I still have a daily driver Maxima, a Ram pickup for boat hauling and my other toy a 88 300ZX, hence my screen name (used to have an 87). I think car went to a good home.

Moving on!! Looking forward to getting the boat engine repaired, driving in the Z to the boat and out on the Bay for a few cold ones. Nothing left to do but smile smile smile!!!!
