Dont rush it Sam, just keep it level and u will be happy in the end. Takes about a full day between sandings.

Yeah laying down the clear is a time consuming proposition. Patience and Time are the Key Ingredients. 2 Coats a day is about the best you can do and IMHO 10 coats are minimum. That's why I ALWAYS spray the clear.

Mike the varnishing seems to go fairly quickly . Its the sanding between coats and the clean up before the next coat thats slowing me down . LOL !!!

Epiphanes
and possibly other companies make varnish that does not require sanding between every coat. Kinda like shellac in that the next coat will "melt" into the previous coat creating good adhesion between coats. You might call Epiphanes to get their advice.
Generally there is a requirement to apply a second coat within a certain timeframe (I think a few days for Epiphanes). If this is the case, unless you have a lot of impurities you might be able to do 2 three coats before sanding.

Remember I AM just an Old Dumb Okie so DON'T take my word for it.

I was just going with the directions on the can ... :noidea:
‘But to do a few coats without sanding would most definitely save some time ...:joyous:

You can do 2 coats and then sand, but like Mike said, stay within the recoat window........as long as its level., too much build up of air bubbles or bumps, and you will end up sanding most of it back off, or risk seeing them in the final coats.

Thanks for the input guys ! I just finished up the second coat inside the hull and third coat topside .
I better document the number of coats here as I go .. My short term memory has been lacking since the end of the 80’s .. :watermelon: ... Gunna be kinda cool tonight .. Down to freezing they say so probably won’t cure completely by morning . I’ll get up early and go turn on a couple space heaters to warm the garage . Maybe another coat by lunch time ...

It was a 2 comforter 2 pickernesse and a tea cup something or other till about 5:00 am . Daughter went to work so added 2 more pickerknees and another little white somethin or other .. So I head to the garage while avoiding 3 rather large canine spread on the floor .. “ Kennel Life “ :dog:
50 deg in the goradge this morning . The 2 little space heaters will knock the chill down fairly quick . The boat is starting to look like something now ! I guess I will work on the trailer this morning while the varnish is still tacky ..
Im not sanding this go round so will get another coat on today ..

? Can says 24 hrs between coats .. Is this just so it will sand out ? Or can I get away with re-coat in a shorter time frame ?
So after lunch would be around 16/17 hours or so .

You can get away with hot coating up to 2 coats, as long as your brush strokes dont dent the undercoat.....up to 72 hrs

10/4 ..
‘It’s pretty much dry just still a bit tacky
On the open flat areas I rolled the varnish then tipped it with the brush . That helped speed things up a bit ..

Good airflow is paramount for curing varnish. Circulation fans are highly recommended.

Put coat 4 on topside and coat 3 on inside . I’m not sure if it’s dust or bubbles showing up on e deck ..
