gel is simply colorized thickened resin. all the strength is at the glass layer.

spent day grinding gunale today to take the gelcoat off in 33C...managed to finish it after 5 hrs
agreed no easy way to do this

drilled some holes in top of gunale to help with bonding
will lay one layer of 1oz (300 grm) CSM and 17oz (617 grm) biaxle cloth onto the gunale first
then the gurit board which has already had laminate of 1oz csm/17oz biaxle
then 1-2 layers of laminate on top
then tidy up
not sure how to finish with gelcoat or ??????

expecting 43C (110 F) tomorrow in Melbourne
may have to get up earlier and put down the first layer on gunale, not sure whether I'll get to the gluing the new raised gunale or not before the heat starts to climb

My self I painted cars motorcycles whatever all my life. Boats have gel coat for a reason. Tougher don't chip and easier to keep up in the elements. This is just my opinion after only my 3rd year dealing with a boat. But I baby mine and I would have nightmares if it was painted. I be doing touch up more than boating.

To me quick 3000 sand and buff wax is much easier than the gouge the equivalent amount of force would have caused on paint. Peoples shoes eyelets and rivits on jeans. Getting in and out. Just a dull spot. Or Oh the humanity down to the glass. Choice is yours. I found gel coat to me much more forgiving albeit more work than paint if you want good results.

mate I hear you
the gel coat on hull seems to be in good nick
the exception is where I have modified the transom for surface drive,
the cap/deck has been modified from windscreen (well not fitted yet) back, front bow area gel coat in good cond
So not really sure what to do
I was thinking to paint the top part above rub rail (not fitted yet)

got around to laminating the guit boards which will form the new gunwale
laminated the csm/bi-axle cloth along top of the old gunwale, managed to get it down before the heat of the day came up and peaked at 38C (100F) thankfully no 110F today.
Mixed the VE catalyst @ 1.5% plenty of working time

all set tomorrow to bond the laminate which will be new height of gunwale

made a bump decision on hatch hinges, which didn't like how they looked

end up purchasing the following hinges which look more study

started gluing the new gunwale on to boat
needed to build up the rear of the hatch so hinges were level with top of deck
was contemplating rebating the hinges into deck however decided against this

ran out of vinyl ester
need to laminate few more layers of cloth
have some west 105 /206 epoxy here
wonder if I could get away with laminating on to the VE laminate?
how soon can you laminate a epoxy on to Vinyl ester laminate??

My sister-in-law has been complaining about that as well. They also live in Melbourne

yes we are okay on Mornington Peninsula, fires approx. 3 hrs driving time east of our location
we have nothing to complain about considering what some some families are going through
all we got was some smoke
was coming home last monday just before 9.00PM stopped off at Mt Martha beach, and took a few pictures of the last moments of Melbourne sunset

Looks like sky was on fire

back home last week, and 4 day weekend this week, time to get back into boat
glued and laminated the additional height on the deck

decided to use router to cut back and make right the straightness of the rear so its level with the top of the hatch to get the hinges aligned

taking a little longer than expected, bit messing around

had to go and get another 20 litres of VE, thought my fibre glassing days were over
seems the little jobs take for ever

Hopefully I can get all this straightened into shape and then finish wrapping with some fibreglass cloth

Then install hinges

I have mixed feelings about the two-piece covers. many are stock GM Gen V covers with the spacer required when you run adjustable valvetrain (just at a much higher cost). plus its an extra leak point.

I am running Hardin Marine valve covers that are angled to clear the exhaust manifold. got mine used and thrown in with a bunch of motor parts that i bought.

Here is a pic from my engine build

yes clearance becomes an issue with some of these larger exhaust
I picked up another set of KE r/covers before xmas which had valve spring squirters installed but essential same 2-piece cover

I have a set of LS Chev exhaust that I accumulated sometime ago, wont be using as running BBC, if someone is interested
