I recently got (for free) a 15' boat. Black deck and hull, ruined red and white interior. Johnson 55 engine. I thought it was a 1965 Lone Star Mustang, until I located the HIN, it stated "Chrysler" and the number is 143211143. So now I'm thinking it's a 1966 after researching more. Is there any way to find out exactly what year it is? Thanks. Oh, the Johnson is going away, I got a 1967 Mercury 650 to go on it.

They didn't start putting hull identification numbers on boats until 1972, and the first three digits should be letters, not numbers, for a HIN. Try fiberglassics, to see if they have information there, and post some pics here - there may be someone here who can help ID it.

Here are a couple of links to details on HIN: http://www.boatsafe.com/nauticalknowhow/hin.htm

Sometimes an owner/state used the Serial# as a stand-in for HIN on pre 1972 boats that were bought/sold/registered after HINs became required.

Post some pix of the new to you boat, LS or Chrysler....
