Odd fuel problem on 2004 2 stroke 115 Yamaha (TXRC)
Recently bought a 2004 2 stroke Yamaha 115. Cleaned the carbs. Experienced but not professional at carb cleaning.
It appears that tilting the motor up and trailering it causes some type of vapor lock. It does not get fuel after doing those two things. The motor can be running great. But if I tilt/trim it up and drive it somewhere (to the landing argghh) it will not crank unless I pull the air box off and spray starter fluid into it. It will then do just fine. I can turn it off and on and it will crank at the turn of the key.
The electronic choke appears to work okay, but I can use the manual choke and it does not make a difference.
Oh, I thought problem could be the onboard fuel tank, so I bypassed and used a plastic fuel tank with fresh (non-ethanol) gas.

first off, DO NOT use starter fluid, use mixed fuel in a squirt bottle. you need to pump your bulb before cranking. if the choke is working properly it will get fuel and fire. if not then you have a choke problem.

Thanks for the advice about not using starter fluid.
I am pumping the primer bulb until it is very tight.
The boat landing is less than 2 miles from my house. It can be running on the hose, and I then take it to the landing and have the boat in the water in less than 5 minutes - and it won't crank.

well if you can squirt fuel into the carbs and then it cranks, then you have a choke issue. choke/fuel enricher is designed to put fuel into your cylinder for cranking. if your choke is a butterfly type, make sure all butterflies are closing completely, if it is a fuel enrichment type, check all hoses and passages. I had a 1996 evinrude that the enrichment fuel passed through the intake gasket to the cylinders, the gasket had swollen shut stopping fuel flow, had to replace intake gaskets, I am not sure how your motor works but you just got to follow it to the end. if it is enrichment, you should be able to see fuel squirting into the intake/back of carb with a flash light when you hit the "choke"

O.K., run the boat on the muffs, turn it off, tilt it up and drive to the ramp. When you get there, remove cowl and check for fuel leaking from carbs, and remove spark plugs to check for fuel wet condition or totally fuel dry condition. Maybe when you tilt motor up the fuel is leaking out of float chambers into intakes, causing wet/rich mixture in cylinders? Good Luck!
