Default New water pump-no pisser??? WHOA! !!

1985 200hp Yamaha. I replaced the water pump, lower seals, and the thermostats. Went out once and everything was fine. Second outing and pisser stopped and alarms went off and engine stopped. HMMM. So after a good cool down I started it up and limped home with a small pisser. So I got it on the muffs and a great stream came out about 6 foot of strong water. Then it all about stopped and came back without any change in acceleration. What could it be???

When you replaced the water pump was all the rubber blades there. If one was missing it could be getting stuck in the water passage and cutting off water supply then it drops away and then you have good flow. Usually the rubber blades drop down to your intake plastic piece on your lowerunit where your muffs go over. I had 3 rubber pieces there when i cleaned mine out.

All the blades are accounted for. Would pulling the thermostats and running water through the heads back down flush things out? Another post said it could be a bug in the pisser. Would that make it overheat?

no that would not cause overheating it is just indicates that the water pump is pumping water.
Maybe you just picked up something that covered the intake to water pump while on the water

I thought about that. But it starts on muffs with a good stream and then slows to trickle.?? Cools off and the same thing...

Try the poppit valve. It gave me alot of trouble when trying to figure out an overheat problem. You can also check for any blockages from that point. I've heard of thermo sensors going bad but that shouldn't change the amount of water coming out of the pisser. Good luck!

Sounds like the key behind the impellor might have slip down during install and impellor is slipping

Sparky- Where is the "poppit" valve? I was thinking of taking the lower end off and hose clamping the water hose straight to the top end and starting it to see if it is a pump issue. Would that work? I thought about the key thing Bluefish and when I replaced the impeller I thought..I should use genuine Yamaha. I found a cheaper kit from Sierra and went with that one. Did I make a mistake? I figured they would have had bad reviews or something to indicate this would be a mistake but everything I saw looked good in reviews.

well if you can not find anything else wrong then try a Yamaha one to see if it makes a difference.
I always use factory parts myself.

Make sure the water pump housing is good and there no places that air or exhaust gases can be sucked into the water pump

Couldn’t say about aftermarket pump. During install the key sometimes slips down and ends up under the impellor and causes intermittent flow

I guess I'm taking it apart again. I replaced the housing and everything else when I did the seals in the bottom end. I bought a kit that had all the parts so everything matched. When I first started it it I had a stream that was very nice! Where is this poppit valve?

On my 1992 yamaha 200hp 2 stroke I was having a similar problem and it turned out that the motor had sucked up a little sand and it melted the inside of the housing, the housing and impellor were a month old too.

I just had the same problem with my 75hp. Took the darn LU off a few times trying to figure out why my new impeller stopped pumping. Tore the housing apart and then reassembled it. Water starting pumping again. Still not sure what the culprit was.

Check the impeller key very closely...maybe you sheared a sliver off it and now it's not holding the impeller.

Have you checked the thermostat? If not try it.

Also check that when you installed the housing, the blades are facing the right way. You have to turn as you push so that the blades are bent the correct way. Just and idea because when I did mine a few weeks ago, this was one thing that I was told to make sure of or the impellor would not work properly. I know it is a simple notion, but sometimes I forget the most simple things.

Sorry for not getting back sooner. The poppitt valve (Pressure Control Valve, or PCV) for my engine was in the upper casing, above the lower unit. The valve was hidden behind a small plastic piece of trim, I ended up buying an oversized crescent wrench to work on it easier. I'm not sure if the valve will make any difference for you or not, from what I understand they are designed to open, similiar to a thermostat, after the engine has sufficiently warmed up. This is more important for colder climate's but for me in Southwest Florida it's nearly pointless since the water never get's cold enough to make the PCV that important.

I agree with what some other people have said about your thermo's, they can be a pain and can get stuck in nearly any position, including partially opened.

I also ran my air compressor up to a high PSI and blasted the coolant lines, not really recommended but when I was having a problem I couldn't figure out, I went with it. Keep in mind the pisser is only an indicator, if your not overheating, you are getting some sort of flow.

PCV has nothing to do with temperature control of motor, it just relieves high pressure at high RPM.
spring closes it back off as pressure goes down during low RPM.
If it sticks open, too much water is dumped before going through motor and the motor overheats

Your manual should have that info, or look at a part break down

Finally got round to taking her apart and found the problem. ANTS. No shizzle. Ants in the pisser tube. Can't believe this could make my engine overheat. Took the lower end off and tested it with my drill. Tested ok. Hooked the water hose to the water inlet on the motor and turned on the water and nothing from the pisser-except an ant...looked closer and it was full of ant and eggs and such. So I replaced the whole line and drilled out the fitting at the end so it would be less likely to be plugged and voila! Biggest best stream I ever saw. Hope to pee like that when I get old! HAHA! So now when I put her away I will set a screw loosely in the end of the tube and a large sponge will go in the motor cover where air comes in for the engine intake.

So you still do not understand that a stopped up tell tail has no impact on overheating on the motor?
It is just an indicator the the pump is pumping water,
but some motors do use the tell tail flow to cool rectifier/regulator
