Default 2004 Yamaha water guage backlight stays on

We just bought the boat and the water temp. gauge stays lit without the key being turned on. Is this something new or the gauge just wired wrong?
    Thanks,
    Dennis

Gauge is wired wrong. When do the lights for the other gauges come on (or do they?). Sometimes the back lights are wired to the ignition switch and are on anything the key is on. Unnecessary in my view but if that's the way it was done so be it. Generally the back lights are wired to the NAV/ANC light switch so they are on only when the switch is in the NAV position. If the other gauges work normally, disconnect the back light wire from its current source (not at the gauge) and connect it to the back light terminal on any other gauge.

    SM,
Thanks for the info. I like the idea of wiring it to the NAV lights. Would not of thought of that.

Make sure you wire to the NAV light side of the switch. No sense having the back lights on when at anchor (when only the anchor light is on).
