Default Racks with out Tower or Pylon????

Hey everyone. I was wondering if anybody makes a rack that can be mounted to the boat or any other way besides on a tower or pylon. I have a pylon but do not want one of those racks as we do not always have it set up.

    Any ideas?????

I did see where someone built something like that at home somewhere. Google may retrieve it for you. However, I cant remember where I read it at.

So yes, I have seen is before, but cant point you to where, sorry

    I looked into these before.
Here is one of the biggest companies I have seen that makes them.
    http://www.liquidcouragewatersports.com/Default.aspx
I have also read on a few places, where people have been able to make their own a little simple.
They dont look as flashy, but they work good.
I will dig a little more and see what I can find.

Thanks that helps. I checked out the other thread and got some good ideas. I might be able to make something up like that. The one on liquid courage is kind of pricey and I would need two of them.

What style of boat is it? The first boat I had was a closed bow and I needed all the extra space I could get, so I mounted a set of ski racks on the bow and they worked great. They would hold boards or skiis and were even lockable. I live in utah and most rigs have roof mounted ski racks for snow skiing so these were kind of a double duty setup. On the explorer in the winter, then onto the boat in the summer. I am in the same dilemma right now, I have a tower with a board rack on it but don't know if I want to lay down 350 bucks on a ski rack. So I'm trying to figure out a way to make one that looks good and will hold my 500.00 dollar ski securly. Good luck.

I have an open bow Larson. We usually have 2 wakeboards and 1 ski so with all the people and gear I just need a new setup so there is more room in the back.

I have been looking at those liquid courage ones for a while. However, they are steep in price. Two of those and you can have a tower -- forget that!

Yeah it just doesn't seem worth it. I guess at this point my best bet would be creating something myself. Thanks for all the advice

No, they don't use suction cups.
And most of the stuff that you buy pre-built is only so expensive because no one else makes it. The materials cost like $50 and the turn around and sell them for $300+
Same thing with a tower or Pylon.
But, yeah, I have been considering constructing stuff for a long time, but am almost at the point that I want to just hold out for another boat.

    Smitty -
It would probably be just as easy to make you own railing on the side and then buy a normal board rack.
But, that picture does give me a really good idea about that, now that I think about it.
You could really buy a 2" handicap bathroom arm, like you see in a handicap stall of a public restroom. You would only need one that was about a foot long. And, then you can just buy a standard wake board rack and mount it to that.
Would only cost around $250 for the whole thing. (That is if you bought a $200 wakeboard rack.)

Those are some great ideas to make one. I think that is the best bet and the cheapest. I think I will like them on the side of the boat instead of on the pylon.

Can you just mount the pole directly to the boat on the side? My boat does not have an area to put one like in the picture.

1-1/2" should be more than plenty to just hold a board rack.

    Caken-
You can mount the pole to side of the boat, but in this case the a lot of downward force will be pulling on it. You will want to make sure to reinforce it as much as possible. That way, even in rough water, the board rack won't give when weighted down. Pretty much, go with placing something like treated 2x4 on the back side. That way you can spread the pressure from the anchor points out over a greater area.

Everywhere I have looked has not been as good of quality or as as cheap as DIYwake.
I think the one for sale on there is actually made by a company called Pyramid Manufacturing. But, even if you find their retail shop for those, they run about $65 before shipping.

not meaning to take the thread off target or anything but that's an awesome idea. I'm going to run on a tanget with that one for my 15' runabout and make rod holders that attach like that so I can get me some more room in my boat.

    hell yeah.

There's a guy down in Texas who rebuilt a 14' Larson, I just read his thread over the weekend. He did the same thing as is posted here with that other boat. He purchased two holders and mounted them on the side of his boat. He's really cramped for space as you can imagine with a 14' boat, but these mounts really helped him out. Not sure the cost, but definitely cheaper than getting a tower, etc.

If you look hard enough I'm sure you'll find his thread, it's a huge thread with a lot of pictures, a great read.

Those boards sure take up a lot of room, that's for sure.

I didn't go through the post again, but he listed his costs, I think the cost of the mounts were in there.

That boat is really nice. Very well laid out, and very well planned.
Definetly would be nice to see it on the water.
I wish I could get the time to work on a project like that (well, I have the time, just not the patience right now).
