Ok I am stumped so it is time to ask the experts. I have a 1998 Larson 186 with a volvo 4.3GL in it, today I was out on the river everything was working fine stopped a few times to fish and the last time went to start the engine and it was a no go. When you turn the key the fuel pump will energize and that is all that happens.I checked the three circuit breakers (which i assume will pop if there is a malfuntion) and they had seemed to pop. Could this just be my starter being dead? Thanks ahead of time for the help.
checked that I have regular connectors on the battery not wing nuts, and they are free of corrosion. Thanks for the reply anything you all can think of I appreciate.

I assume you was turning the key to the start position and that is when the pump came on but the starter didn't. Is that correct?

Yes that is correct, turn the ket to the start postion and the fuel pump will energize, but nothing from the starter. It had started 3 times previous to this today but then nothing on the last try.
It could be your start relay is bad, what's the full model number (need the letters after 4.3GL) or serial number of your engine.

I think we have the same exact engine. Definitely look at that thread Don S posted, it helped me pin a problem I was having to the starter. Test each component of the starting circuit. The starter relay switch is behind the circuit breakers on the starboard side riser (took me a bit to find it); remove the plastic covering to access it.
Obviously before doing any of this switch testing, make sure your battery is good, charged, terminals are not corroded at all, cables are tight, all engine ground connections are not corroded and are tight.
Wanted to say thank you to Don S and familyguy, got the boat fixed, it was a bit later than I wanted due to a short deployment but now I can enjoy the boat. After testing the starter it came down to the relay by the circuit breakers, picked up one off of Ebay for 26.00 bucks got it a few days later and varooom she starts again yippiee. Thank you all so much now that I am back it's time to head to the red river and enjoy some down time.

I have a 4.3 Volvo Penta 225HP on a 2007 Four Winns. I am able to move the trim up and down and have even tried jump starting the motor. It did nothing. Nothing has power and when i turn the key, it acts as if the battery is disconnected. Is there a breaker or kill switch (besuides the one on the control that is fine)? I am confused as to what it can be. The radio and all dash controls are off.
