volvo outdrive question

i am trying to help a buddy of mine change the lower unit oil on his boat. he has a 1992 larson with a volvo penta outdrive, we found the lower drain plug, but the we cant find the upper one, can someone tell me where to look i hope this makes sense!!

jdcook, if its the duo prop (dp) the fill point is a allen key bolt (plug) behind the front cover, top right. When you remove the front cover it will be obvious as it is the only wide head bolt there.Aldo

his boat has a resevoir of fluid inside the engine compartment, when we drain the fluid will the resevoir drain as well, and when we refill do we refill from the bottom plug, or from the resevoir inside the boat.thanks for the replies, i don't know much about boats, ad even less about volvos.

hello I have never seen a volvo that old with a resevoir. the composite dp_x drives have one but they were introduced about 2002. sounds like dr frankenstien hits again.I will tell you that if its a volvo DP and you fill the oil up past the level of the cone on the lower gear in the upper housing you will end up puking the upper shaft through the top cover. good luck and keep postingps the top cover plug has a dipstick for level checking. or it did when it left the factory

Okay, the resevoir inside the boat is not the lower unit oil resevoir (thanks rodbolt). We got the lower unit oil drained tonight and it is GREEN. I dont know if water got to it or if it is suppossed to be green, can some one tell me what kind of oil needs to go back into the lowerunit(volvo Dp).thanks

RodboltDarn there for a moment I thought there were two of us out here that had installed a reservoir on a DP drive??? Oh well I guess not. I'm now over a hundred hours on mine and still going.Charlie
