A friend has brought me his new (used) boat to work on. It is a 24' cruiser with an empty engine room where a GM V8 used to be and a Volvo 270 outdrive less the upper unit. I pulled the prop and found the gear ratio on the lower unit is 2.15 - 1. I don't understand how (or why) this ratio would be used in this application. It appears to all be original, what's left of it anyway.
The lower is 30+ years old, and may have had a new carrier installed. If the installer didn't change the gear ratios stamped numbers, and just installed a used part, guess what. Wrong ratio shown.

Just got back in from pulling the carrier and it was all a mute point. The prior owner didn't protect the lower unit from water so there isn't anything there worth saving.
