" white rust" on galvanised trailer,

I recently removed the felt fitted to the hull guides on my boat trailler and found a fair ampount of corrosion along the guides. This corrosion was a white powdery substance that had eaten into the galvanized surface but not into the metal, this was refered to as "white rust"I have been told that diesel fuel and wire brushing will remove this corrosion, are there any other known ways of removing this corrosion,I thought that this was some form of sea salt corrosion but have now way of testing for sea salt corrosion all I know this stuff sticks lie glue to a wool blanket and requires a lot of physical work to remove, I fear that if this corrosion is not removed and treated properly it will just re-occur , at the moment this is only on the surface and has not eaten right through the galvanizsing ( where i started to clean) Kind regards William Wright,
