Let me preface this by saying I know absolutely nothing about motors at all. I just bought a 1967 starcraft kingfisher. It came with 1967 40hp evinrude motor that I cannot get started. I am currently in the market for a newer evinrude (at least early 90's) and I was wondering how to find out how much hp my boat can handle. I know this is probably not the right forum, but I had to start somewhere! I also need to know if the boat needs a long or short shaft motor and something about whether or not it needs trim. Can anybody point me in the right direction?Picture 169.jpg
Just looking at the boat, I'd guess a max HP in the range of 40-50. Don't be afraid of any Johnson/Evinrude '73 or newer. Parts support is still great.
i have a kingfisher, the plate says max 50hp. it would move with a 50! your 40 would be more than enough. mine is like 21.5 from top of transom to bottom of keel
